Heritage as something you hear

Culture is easy to display and hard to transmit. A festival photographs well. What is harder to pass on is why a particular sweet is made on a particular day, or what an elder actually said while making it. Those details survive in speech far better than in writing.

The stories in this category sit close to lived practice — observances, regional customs, the reasoning behind things families do without quite remembering why.

Told mostly in Hindi, and that matters

Most of what is here is recorded in Hindi, with a smaller number in English, Tamil and Spanish. That is an honest reflection of who has been recording, not a judgement about whose heritage counts.

If your tradition is missing from this shelf, it is missing because nobody has recorded it yet. That is a gap you can close. A phone and a quiet room are enough to begin.

The case for recording your own

Every family holds stories that exist in exactly one place, usually in the memory of its oldest member. They are rarely written down, and they disappear quietly rather than dramatically.

Recording an elder telling one, in their own words and their own language, takes an afternoon. It is the single most valuable thing most people can add to a category like this.
